Goose Island Trip - 2-15-09

Finished our week at Hidden Oaks on 2/4, and moved to Goose Island State Park.  Did have a relaxing week at Hidden Oaks, and would recommend this place.  Friendly people, nice activities building, and would really be good if they could get their wifi fixed.

During our stay at Hidden Oaks, we did take a trip to Kingsville for a visit to the King Ranch.  Very impressive cattle operation with a lot of Texas history.  I have been reading several Elmer Kelton western novels, and was in a mood for some cowboy atmosphere.

One evening we went to the Boiling Pot restaurant in Fulton.  It is a Cajun place that serves boiled dinners dumped on the table in front of you.  They put bibs on you to try to keep yourself clean.  Food was pretty good....atmosphere was also good.   See picture.

We were fortunate to get a bayfront site at Goose Island State Park for a week, starting on February 4.  We were even more fortunate to be able to extend our stay until the 15th.  The campsite was one of the better ones we have ever had.  Backed the HitchHiker into the site so that when you looked out the back window, all you could see was the bay.  See picture.

Had some really nice days, weatherwise, and some not so good.  We had about four days, right in the middle of our stay, during which the wind blew all the time, gusting to over 30mph.  As you can see in the picture, if the wind is blowing off of the ocean, there is nothing to stop it.  One night, after we had gone to bed, Kay insisted that she had felt the whole trailer move, and asked me to go out an check on the wheel chocks.  After a trip outside in my PJ's and robe, I was able to ascertain that the trailer was in the same place it had been.  Really, as high as the wind was blowing, neither of us was sleeping too soundly.  We were high enough above the water level to avoid direct salt spray on the trailer, but we still got some light spray.  We were able to get it all washed off when the wind died down.

One high point of our stay in the Rockport-Fulton area was the Nebraska Day luncheon.  We saw some signs posted in local businesses, and decided to give it a try.  Luncheon was held at the Butter Churn resturant in Aransas Pass.  We got there early, but like good Nebraskans, about half of the others were already there, too.  The organizers were expecting about 40 people, and 100 showed up!  All of these people are "Winter Texans", spending the winter here instead of the frigid north.  Fortunately they had seating for everyone.  They struggled to keep enough food on the buffet for everyone, but all had a good time.  Introductions were made all around, and it was nice to visit with fellow Nebrakans.......even though we had to confess to living in Texas all this time.

Made the drive from the coast to our new digs at the Canyon Trail RV Resort between San Marcos and New Braunfels on Sunday the 15th.  Will be here until Jacob, our new grandson, arrives.  Will try to stay long enough to spoil him a bit before we head back to north Texas.  More later..........

Larry

We lived in the Corpus Christi area until retirement then moved to NE Texas. I loved the Boiling Pot and the Butter Churn. We camped east of San Marcos at a campground at Fentress, right on the San Marcos River. It was off season and very quiet. We traveled several of the places you have. They hassled us about guns going into Canada from St Mary's MT too. I thought they were going to completely unload the truck. We were tenters at the time and had the tent up in 17 states. Now that we have a trailer, we just camp in states adjoining Texas. I have enjoyed reading about your travels very much, thanks for taking the time to post.
