Goose Island Trip - 1-30-09
Larry writing again......
Our stay on South Padre Island sadly came to an end on Wednesday, January 28. Had a really fun month there that ended way too quickly. We tried to extend our stay, but the site was reserved on the day we left. Next year, we will be there for January AND February.
Before I go on to the current situation, and to what we have planned, I wanted to write about a couple of the funnier things we enjoyed together at SPI. First, we went to a "Park Meeting" about half way through our stay. One of the topics for discussion was the coyotes that were making noise during the night. Of course, we had heard them, and I was surprised to hear them so close to the beach. Campers were concerned about the danger to their pets, and the park officials tried to reassure the people that appropriate steps were being taken to "relocate" the coyotes. With a wink to the the crowd, the park official explained that the relocation - to the chagrin of animal activists - involved relocating the animals fron earth to heaven.
The other thing I wanted to relate was one of the funnier comments we ever heard. During the first week of our stay, we were out taking an early morning exercise walk with the Whiteleys and the Scotts. Bobby Scott, not being the one to want the most vigorous exercise, observed that the pace of the walk was resulting in "whitecaps" on the top of his coffee. Needless to say, the pace of our walk slowed considerably over the next few minutes.
Our sad departure date from South Padre came on Wednesday. Spent most of Tuesday getting the trailer ready to pull out first thing on Wednesday morning. A really brutal cold front came roaring through at about 2:30 on Wednesday morning. High winds, rain, and falling temperatures. I told Kay that it was a sign that the good weather was over, and we needed to leave. Pulled out of Isla Blanca at about 9:20 for the 220 mile trip to Goose Island State Park (about 40 miles north of Corpus Christi). Wind was bad, and I was a little scared going over the SPI causeway, but we made the trip to Goose Island in one piece. Unfortunately, by the time we got to Goose Islan about 2 PM, they only had two campsites left. With a can opener, we might have been able to get our fifth-wheel into one of them, but it was really unrealistic. We managed to find a spot at the Hidden Oaks campground, about a mile north of the park. Nothing fancy, but 50 amp service, water, sewer, and wifi that works some of the time - all for $140 per week. Looks like we will stay here for a week, anyhow.
Took our time getting started on Thursday morning - Kay had to finish a good book. Made our way into Rockport to Moondog for lunch. Last year I had enjoyed the very best grouper sandwich ever, and I was not disappointed with the one this year. In the evening we were able to adjust the tv antenna so that we got a Fox station, and we were able to watch American Idol. We have been spoiled by having cable tv for the last several weeks. Friday morning we got an earlier start, and took a drive to Port Aransas. Looked at some RV places there, including a county park that isn't too fancy, but has water, electric, and is right on the beach. Also went to a fancy RV place called Gulf Waters. All of the campsites are privately owned. If the owner is not there, they rent out their places. Some very nice landscaping, and a very nice location, but the lots are awefully small for a $42k minimum. We are still trying to make up our mind about where we will stay next week. Of course, Katie is due in the next three weeks, so the choice about where we will stay may not be our own.............
.
More next week,
Larry
