South Padre Trip - Jan 23
Larry writing again.....
Another fun filled week here in tropical paradise. This will be our last, as we are scheduled now to depart here on Wednesday the 28th. That's the bad news. The good news is that we have a reservation for up to two weeks at Goose Island State Park, just north of Rockport, Tx. It's 200 miles north of here, but the temperatures will still be warm, and we will still be close to the ocean. We visited Goose Island last year on our trip to Corpus Christi, so we know it is nice.
Had a visit from our New Jersey friends Gary and Pauline. We met them at the Hitchhiker luncheon the prior week. They are staying with friends at a nice RV park in Donna, Tx., but they are disappointed that they are so far from the beach. They had tried to get in at Isla Blanca, but found that it was booked. They have since made a reservation for next year, and wanted to come see what their lot looked like. Had a nice visit. Went to Dirty Al's for supper. Hopefully we will be seeing them again next year.
Played Farkle again last Saturday, and then bean bags on Monday. There is a group of about 20 couples that seems to really go for this kind of activity. The bean bag game is played like horseshoes, but instead of the shoe, you have a small cloth bag filled with beans. Instead of a stake, you have a board, slanted toward you, with about a 6-inch hole in it. Object - throw the bag through the hole. Mixed teams are drawn, and everyone plays for the fun of it. Both of our teams lost early. Kay's partner, Rodeo, is a real character from NW Iowa. He's been coming down for a long time, and everyone knows him and likes him. Unfortunately, Kay was a much better bean bag thrower.
Tuesday we went to the "Sea Turtle Lady". Actually, they have a real facility here that works to help propagate the sea turtle population. They treat and nurture injured animals with the intention of returning them to the wild. Some turtles with bad injuries (more than one flipper lost) are kept there, or sent to zoos and aquariums around the world. They also participate in programs to guard turtle nests and supervise the safe release of babies to the sea. They had a nice program, and then they had a display set up so you can feed a turtle (romaine lettuce) and take your picture with him. See me in picture.......
Wednesday we went to Boca Chica State Park. This is just a stretch of remote beach that goes from the south side of the Brownsville shipping channel to the Rio Grande river. Nothing there but beach. We picked up some nice shells, and had a picnic lunch. We were fortunate, once again, that we had such a beautiful day to visit this place. On the way home we stopped at the Shrimp Outlet for two more 5-pound bags of shrimp. Our first bag is almost gone.
It's really been a fun month here on SPI. Can't believe our time here is almost gone for this year. We are so looking forward to returning for a longer period next year. Next entry will be from Goose Island or beyond. Talk then.............

Is Boca Chica State Park anywhere near Del Boca Vista?
It looks like you are having a blast. I'm glad you are enjoying your retirement.
Hopefully we see you guys again soon. It was great seeing you over Christmas.
